In 1854, a small but growing Catholic community in Balik Pulau, Penang, were finally able to celebrate mass in a proper church building after almost a decade when the first Eucharist was celebrated by French missionary, Rev. Fr. Ducotey in an attap hut. Today, with a much larger and still growing Catholic community, the church building, while retaining its original form, has been enhanced and supplemented by a parish house, a grotto, a funeral parlour and a formation centre, all within a natural garden-like setting. In 2014, the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus (HNJ) Balik Pulau celebrated its 160th parish anniversary and continues to serve the parishioners of both Balik Pulau and Penang Island.
In conjunction with the 160th parish anniversary celebrations, the parish underwent a beautification project supervised by Fr. Martin Thien. These efforts make HNJ one of the few Malaysian churches with an assortment of wall murals, a mini museum located within the parish office, and plants with symbolic theological meanings located within the church compound.
The church continues to attract Malaysian and overseas tourists who come to experience the warmth and hospitality offered by the church. HNJ is located a few meters away from the Balik Pulau town, otherwise known as the "Kongsi", where the “roundabout” fountain was built in the late 1800s. Visitors also frequent the parish as a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city life or as a sanctuary where quiet time is spent with God. Many find solace in prayer and meditation in the HNJ prayer room located within the backdrop of majestic hills overlooking the church.
Throughout the years, Balik Pulau remains fairly untouched by development and still has the best Mother Nature has to offer. Balik Pulau boasts of a fairly multicultural community and agriculture remains one of its largest industries. It is said that Balik Pulau was established by Chinese farmers of the Hakka community and Malay settlers from Kedah who sought refuge from the harsh political and economical conditions in China and Kedah respectfully.
It is often said that a visit to Balik Pulau brings back nostalgic memories for its old charms, authentic food, lush green surroundings and heritage buildings that date back to the 1800s continue to fascinate people from all walks of life. No visit to Balik Pulau is complete without experiencing the delicious food and picturesque sights unique to this place.
Balik Pulau continues being well-known by visitors and foodies alike for its local delicacies prepared by individuals from all walks of life and ethnicities such as the Assam Laksa, Hokkien Noodles, Hakka dishes, Thai food, seafood and various other local dishes which can be enjoyed within a rustic atmosphere of old coffee shops, atop a hill overlooking Penang Island or within wooden houses located along river banks. Not to be missed are the annual durian seasons from the months of May till August.
Other local attractions that one shouldn't miss while in Balik Pulau are witnessing how herbs are planted in its farms, how fresh nutmegs are prepared in its factories or to savour the freshness of local fruits in fruit farms. Have a closer look of how goats are bred in farms or simply go hiking along one of the many available trails. Those who prefer spending time with nature could visit the various beaches, waterfalls and mangrove swamps. The more adventurous could enjoy a horse or bicycle ride whilst enjoying the cool breeze, fresh air and scenes of kampung houses built alongside endless rows of paddy fields.
