PARISH APPRECIATION DINNER
Sunday, 3 January 2016 from 6.00pm to 8.00pm.
As we walked from the car park towards the parish formation centre where the dinner was being held, my wife and I were pleasantly greeted by the Baby Jesus atop a most beautiful float adorned with glorious flowers, pieced together by the loving hands and hearts of about 10 of our parishioners. I felt as if Baby Jesus was welcoming us and showing us the way. What a wonderful start, I thought. The float was for the previous night’s Procession in connection with the closing of our Feast Day Triduum.
The Dinner started on schedule with an opening prayer by Father Anthony Liew preceded by a note of thanks by him to all present for their kind assistance in offering their hands and hearts to ensure that all church programmes including masses were ably managed and run.
About 120 persons comprising members serving in the various ministries from the whole parish attended the steamboat dinner, including whole families who served as Communion Ministers, Altar Servers, Landscape Artists, Musicians etc.
As a steamboat dinner requires a collaborative effort by those seated at each table, the dinner was a noisy and joyful occasion filled with cooperation, laughter, passing around and sharing of food and small talk.
By the end of the dinner, there was not a single scowl or pout on the faces of those who came. Instead, everyone was wearing a smile, chatting with people they already knew, or with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ whose names they just got to know. This evening I learned the names of ten (10) people, including children and youth.
Just as some were thinking about parting ways, to our pleasant surprise in walked Bishop Sebastian Francis, accompanied by former Church of the Holy Name of Jesus Administrator Father Francis Anthony (affectionately known as “F.A.”). It was a blessing in disguise as after their arrival, we all stayed on for a further 20 – 30 minutes, the first 10 minutes of which were spent greeting and chatting with the 2 guests, who, to our good fortune, had already eaten their dinner earlier.
The occasion was a potpourri of the elderly, middle aged, young adults, the young and the very young, as well as members of the clergy and the religious sisters. Just like a Steamboat Dinner – sometimes you do not know what you are going to be served.
Kudos to Father Anthony Liew and the members of the dinner organising committee for wisely deciding that a steamboat dinner would be the appropriate setting for such an occasion and for keeping things pleasant, comfortable and simple. No one was made to feel first nor last.
By 8.00pm, we were saying our goodbyes and as I walked towards my car, the thought that came to my mind was “Gaudium et Spes” – Joy and Hope. Joyful for the occasion, and Hopeful for tomorrow.
